ABOUT
The Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (GCEF) is a joint program of the New York State Office of the Attorney General and Department of Environmental Conservation. The GCEF program is an environmental grant program created by the State of New York with monies obtained through a settlement with ExxonMobil over its Greenpoint oil spill.
GCEF Goal
The GCEF’s goal is to fund projects that will address the Greenpoint Community’s environmental priorities including enhancing open space, greening buildings, infrastructure, and neighborhoods, restoring the waterfront, and promoting environmental education and stewardship through a process that is open, transparent, and ensures ongoing engagement and partnership with the community. Grant Awards
To date, GCEF has awarded 80 grants totaling over $17 million to 48 projects and leveraged an additional $50.4 million in matching contributions from grantees, bringing GCEF’s total investment in improving Greenpoint’s environment to over $67 million.

GCEF granting has included:
- April 2023
$100,000 grant was awarded to the Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center - October 2020
$333,810 in grants was awarded to 18 environmental improvement projects in Greenpoint. - June 2018
$940,812 in grants was awarded to 15 environmental improvement projects in Greenpoint, including 10 grants to expand existing projects and 5 grants for new projects. These GCEF grants are being combined with $472,024 in matching contributions from grant recipients. - December 2015
$4.3 million in “large” and “legacy” grants ($100,000 or greater) was awarded to 5 environmental improvement projects in Greenpoint. The funded projects were the top vote-getters in community voting organized by the GCEF. This $4.3 million in GCEF grants is being combined with $12.7 million in matching contributions from the grant recipients. - November 2015
$992,000 in “small” grants (less than $100,000 each) was awarded to 17 projects for improving Greenpoint’s environment. This funding is being combined with $573,000 in matching funds from the grantees. - December 2014
$11.2 million in “large” and “legacy” grants ($25,000 or greater) was awarded to 6 environmental improvement projects in Greenpoint. The funded projects were the top vote-getters in community voting organized by the GCEF. The $11 million in GCEF grants has been combined with $24.2 million in matching contributions from the grant recipients. - March 2014
$395,000 in “small” grants (less than $25,000 each) was awarded to 18 projects for improving Greenpoint’s environment. This funding has been combined with $228,000 in matching funds from the grantees.
