In 2015, Dupont Street Senior HDFC received a $5,000 GCEF grant (and provided $450 in matching funds) to make environmental improvements, including planting native species to support pollinators and local bird species, at the public senior housing facility’s garden. GCEF funding was used to renovate the existing garden area by installing a 200-square foot native plant garden with plants such as blueberry bushes, butterfly weed, and black-eyed Susans, and two compost tumblers and three tabletop planters. A workshop, attended by 30 facility residents and neighbors, was held on composting and the proper use of compost tumblers.
